  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

FountainRx provides breakthrough medications and support to people living with HIV. HIV is a disease that weakens a person’s immune system by damaging cells that combat disease and infection. It is most often contracted through unprotected sex or needle sharing. If left untreated, the disease reduces the number of CD4 cells (T cells) in the body. As a result, the body struggles to fight off life-threatening infections and disease.

Many people with HIV don’t have any symptoms for years and may not even know they have the virus. However, potential symptoms can include fever, headache and swollen lymph nodes. Blood tests are the most common technique used to diagnose HIV. The tests look for antibodies that the body creates in an attempt to fight the virus. Although there is no cure for HIV, the disease can be managed with the latest therapies. With proper treatment, individuals who are HIV-positive can typically live a long and healthy life.

TRUVADA® is a medicine that helps reduce your risk of contracting HIV-1. You must be HIV-negative prior to and while taking this medication. It works by interfering with an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which HIV-infected cells use to make new viruses. As a result, HIV-infected cells slow down or stop producing these viruses. To get the most out of TRUVADA, it is important to take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

For those already diagnosed with HIV, ISENTRESS® (raltegravir) is an integrase inhibitor that can be used in combination with other medications to help control HIV infection. ISENTRESS decreases the amount of the HIV virus in your body so that your immune system can work more efficiently. This reduces your risk of getting HIV-related complications such as new infections or cancer. Although ISENTRESS is not a cure for HIV, it can help improve your health and quality of life significantly while living with the disease.
